Description: Panna Cotta, which means “cooked cream” in Italian, is a classic Italian dessert known for its silky, creamy texture and delicate flavor. This elegant dessert is made by blending cream, sugar, and gelatin, and can be flavored with vanilla, coffee, or various fruit purees. It’s often served with a berry compote or caramel sauce, making it a versatile and crowd-pleasing treat.

Preparation time: 15 minutes

Cooking time: 10 minutes (plus 4 hours chilling time)

Serving size: Serves 6

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 vanilla bean, split and seeds scraped (or 2 teaspoons vanilla extract)
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons powdered gelatin
  • 3 tablespoons cold water

Instructions:

  1. Bloom the Gelatin: In a small bowl, sprinkle the gelatin over the cold water and let it sit for about 5 minutes to soften.

  2. Heat the Cream Mixture: In a medium saucepan, combine the heavy cream, whole milk, granulated sugar, and vanilla bean (or extract). Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar is dissolved and the mixture is hot but not boiling.

  3. Add the Gelatin: Remove the saucepan from the heat. Add the bloomed gelatin to the hot cream mixture and whisk until the gelatin is fully dissolved.

  4. Strain and Pour: Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into a large measuring cup or bowl to remove the vanilla bean and any undissolved gelatin. Pour the mixture into six ramekins or serving glasses.

  5. Chill: Refrigerate the panna cotta for at least 4 hours, or until set.

  6. Serve: Once set, you can serve the panna cotta as is, or unmold it onto a plate. Serve with fresh berries, berry compote, caramel sauce, or a drizzle of honey.

Final Thoughts: Panna Cotta is a delightful dessert that brings a touch of elegance to any meal. Its smooth, creamy texture and the ability to pair with various toppings make it a versatile favorite. Whether you keep it classic with vanilla or experiment with different flavors, panna cotta is sure to impress both in taste and presentation.
